On July 1, 2026, the first Oraquel DAC installation was launched in Kielce, Poland.
The reactor, designed and installed in the city by Oraquel S.A., uses patented sorbent filters capable of capturing and binding CO2 from the air. It is expected to remove approximately 500 tons of the greenhouse gas from the atmosphere annually. A deciduous forest absorbing a comparable amount of CO2 annually would require approximately 100 hectares. The installation occupies several dozen square meters, and a photovoltaic system will eventually be installed nearby.
Direct Air Capture (DAC) technologies for capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere have been tested for several years in Iceland, Norway, and China. The installations operating there inject the captured carbon dioxide from the air at high pressure into underground boreholes or between natural rocks. The technology operating in Kielce is significantly easier to transport and use, and safer for subsequent storage, as the CO2 is bound by the sorbent. It can also be scaled almost freely.
The Kielce pilot project involves a year-long monitoring of the device's operation and effectiveness. The entire cost of construction, filter replacement, and operation of the device – PLN 1.4 million – is covered by Oraquel S.A. The city has provided a small plot of land in an industrial area (on Olszewskiego Street in the Kielce Technology Park).
